'Godfather of AI' quits Google

Written by Renaud Charrin, Ai Engine CEO May 1st, 2023

A “godfather” of machine learning responsible for some of the biggest breakthroughs in artificial intelligence has resigned from Google so he can, in his words, speak freely about the potential dangers of AI. Geoffrey Hinton, who joined Google in 2013, told The New York Times that he feared the race to deploy generative artificial intelligence will result in a deluge of fake imagery and text, leaving people unable to tell “what is true anymore.” The former Google VP said he also worries that AI will eliminate rote jobs — and possibly endanger humanity if it gets “smarter than people.”

  • In 2018, Hinton and two collaborators won the Turing Award, often called “the Nobel Prize of computing,” for their work on neural networks.
